Today, Mayor Bob Knight wished those members of Team McConnell who have been called to duty as part of Operation Enduring Freedom. They were to depart later this afternoon, their location is undisclosed and the duration of their absence is unknown.
Mayor Knight delivered his well wishes and words of encouragement on behalf of the citizens of Wichita. "At one time celebrities and rock stars were thought of as heroes, but today we all know who the true heroes are...they are every one of you and your brothers and sisters fighting for our freedom," said Mayor Knight.
Mayor Knight presented Col. Michelle Johnson with a City of Wichita flag that will fly out with the troops on their mission. At this time, it is unknown where that will be. When the team returns, they will present the flag to the citizens of Wichita at a City Council meeting. The members of the team will let us know at that time where the flag was flown. Col. Michelle Johnson said that the team was "honored to have this aboard their mission." In return, Col. Johnson presented the Mayor with a commemorative plaque that marked the day.
This was the first time that the City of Wichita presented Team McConnell a City flag to accompany them on a mission.
