The 15th Annual Excellence in Public Service Awards Program is underway. The annual awards program recognizes public service employees representing the City of Wichita, Sedgwick County, and the Wichita Public School System who exhibit the highest standards of dedication and provide a service beyond what any citizen would normally expect in carrying out their responsibilities.

Three recipients of the Excellence in Public Service Award are selected each year. The winners will each receive $2,500, a recognition gift, and a special reception held in their honor. This program enhances the image of employees in the public sector, and gives recognition to those public servants who go above and beyond the call of duty.

Everyone in this community is welcome to get involved in this program by nominating any one of the many public service employees representing the City of Wichita, Sedgwick County, and the Wichita Public School System. The nomination process is very easy! Nomination forms are available in the City Manager's Office, the County Communications Office and the USD 259 Marketing and Communications Office. Nomination forms will be accepted through April 12, 2002.

An Awards Committee, consisting of representatives from the public and private sector, has been formed to administer the Awards Program. Representatives from the public sector will be the Wichita City Manager, the Sedgwick County Manger, and the Superintendent of the Wichita Public School System. Representatives from the private sector will comprise the majority of the nine-member committee.

This program seeks to recognize outstanding employees in public service who demonstrate a combination of the following attributes:

  • exemplary performance that has contributed to the public interest
  • innovative problem solving skills that have improved service delivery
  • adherence to high ethical standards in carrying out job responsibilities
  • record of community involvement through participation in civic organizations

The Excellence in Public Service Awards Program is underwritten by the DeVore Foundation. The City of Wichita, Sedgwick County and the USD 259 School District would like to thank Bill DeVore, Dick DeVore and their families for honoring public service through this worthwhile program.

Recipients of the award are first "surprised at work" by their supervisors, colleagues, members of the Awards Committee, the DeVore family and the media in a coordinated, unannounced visit. The recipients are later honored at a reception attended by their friends, family members and coworkers during whom they are presented with $2500.00.
