A $4.3 Million project to reconstruct Mount Vernon from Greenway Boulevard to Topeka Avenue began this week. The projected completion date is late January 2009, with turf restoration in spring 2009.
The project will replace the existing two-lane street with a new two-lane street that has left-turn lanes at the east and west approaches to Broadway. New traffic signals will be installed at Broadway. A water line, sanitary sewer line, and a large concrete storm sewer line will also be constructed, prior to the pavement work.
Construction will begin with water and sanitary sewer lines in Mt. Vernon, which will at times necessitate reducting Mt. Vernon to one lane of traffic, with flagging to accommodate both eastbound and westbound traffic. Storm sewer and pavement construction will begin in late July, beginning at Greenway Boulevard and progressing to the east. Silver, Exchange, Gold, Palisade, Waco, Wichita and Water will each be closed in sequence. Two adjacent side street intersections will be closed at a time.
During construction of the Mt. Vernon/Main Street intersection, one lane of southbound traffic will be maintained. Market Street will be restricted to one lane of northbound traffic during construction of that intersection. One lane of traffic in each direction will be maintained on Broadway during construction of that intersection, although left turns may be prohibited at times from Broadway. Topeka will not be affected by construction. Access to businesses will be maintained.
