Passengers are flying from Mid-Continent Airport in record numbers, bucking the national trend which shows traffic has leveled off or declined. However, the passenger demand is causing long lines at ticket counters and the security checkpoint. Airport officials and the Transportation Security Administration have provided this advice to travelers to help prepare for the busy summer travel season.
-
Arrive at least 90 minutes prior to your departure.
-
If your flight leaves at or before 7:00 a.m., you are advised to be in the security checkpoint line one hour before departure.
-
The line at the security checkpoint is particularly long between 5:30 a.m. – 7:00 a.m. On some days the line has been backed up to the baggage claim.
-
Other busy times of the day are12:00 p.m. – 1:30 p.m. and 3:00 – 4:30 p.m.
-
The ticket counters close 30 minutes prior to departure so passengers must be checked in before the ticket counters close.
-
Passengers need to be at their gate when boarding begins which is 30 minutes prior to departure.
-
Passengers should check their respective airlines’ baggage policies prior to travel. Call their toll-free number or check their website. Not all airlines have the same policies.
-
Check with your airline regarding luggage weight limits. No oversized bags will be allowed through the checkpoint.
-
Check passport requirements for international travel. Some international destinations will not allow entry if your passport expires within 3-6 months.
The TSA reminds travelers of the three simple steps to security:
-
Show ID and boarding pass. The ID must be a federal or state-issued photo ID containing name, date of birth, gender, expiration date and a tamper-resistant feature.
-
Put liquids and gels in a bag. Remember the 3-1-1 rule for liquids, gels and aerosols at the checkpoint. Those items must be 3 oz. or less and fit in a 1 quart plastic bag.
-
Remove laptops from their cases before going through the screening process.
-
Take off shoes and jackets. Wear slip-on shoes.
The TSA will be implementing an “expert traveler” lane at the checkpoint for travelers who are experienced with security requirements and have little carry-on luggage. The expert travelers concept has been implemented in some airports across the country with successful results. Look for this enhancement sometime this summer.
