The $6.8 Million project to reconstruct Waterman from Main to Washington is nearing completion. The street opened to two lanes of traffic (one in each direction) on April 24, 2008. All lanes should be open in late June following tree planting and the relocation of Westar’s overhead lines to the new underground utility conduit.

“The street construction is done but there is ancillary work that requires temporary lane closures,” Chris Carrier, Director of Public Works said.

The project, which got underway in May 2007, provided new water and storm drain lines, pavement, traffic signals, street lighting and landscaping. Sedgwick County contributed $1.1 Million for storm water drainage related to the planned downtown arena; utilities (phone, cable, electric) contributed $825,000 for shared ducts and related work that they now utilize.

Waterman from Main Street to the railroad overpass now provides wider through lanes and new, ten-foot wide sidewalks. Trees and pedestrian lighting are included.

From the railroad overpass to Washington, a two-way center left-turn lane was added. The sidewalks in this area are seven feet wide, with pedestrian lighting but no trees or planters due to space limitations.
