City of Wichita officials on Friday unveiled the preliminary design of the proposed Old Cowtown Theatre and announced a new timeline for completing the facility at old Cowtown Museum, 1871 W Sim Park Drive.

The preliminary design reveals a 14,636 foot, multi-purpose performance and dining theater which features 472 seats, a stage, a catering kitchen, a covered entry and a patio and walkway connecting to the existing Visitor’s Center. Attached is a power point, provided by Law/Kingdon Architecture of The Law Company, which includes the proposed floor plan and preliminary renderings.

The theater also includes a façade that blends with the current Visitor’s Center. The theater will be home to multiple events and various entertainment acts including Diamond W Wranglers, the acclaimed cowboy band that has been performing at the Visitor’s Center, a smaller facility than the proposed theater.

City officials announced the timeline for completing the facility has changed. The completion date has yet to be determined. The original date was November of 2008. The price tag for the new facility is not expected to exceed approximately $4 million.

“The possibilities become greater all the time so we have decided to step back in order to look at a bigger picture, to look at the entire river corridor from Kellogg to 13th Street – an area that includes WaterWalk, the Keeper, the museum district,  the Riverside Park system and the Boathouse,” Council Member Fearey said. “The CVB worked with the city and the architects on the building design to be sure that it would meet needs that they have to bring additional convention business to the city.  This gives the city time to explore all of the additional possibilities that this venue can bring to our city.”

Contract negotiations are ongoing with the Wranglers.

“They remain extremely positive and they are still committed to staying at Cowtown. For the time being they will remain at the Visitor’s Center while we explore all the possibilities to be sure that we build the right venue for them and for the city.”
