Notice for Portable Sign Owners

The yearly portable sign-licensing period runs from October 1 to September 30. The permits are $100.00 each and can be mailed to:

Office of Central Inspection
City of Wichita
455 N. Main
Wichita, KS 67202

Your sign will be inspected for proper location and licensed by an inspector, from our office, at time of decal installation. The inspection will be conducted with the regulations on the following page as guidelines.

Particular attention must be paid to the proper placement of all portables! These measurements and other important requirements are listed for your benefit.

It is extremely important that you read and understand the requirements for location of portable signs.

If your sign is less than 75 feet from any other portable or permanent sign in a strip center, the sign will not be licensed.

If your portable is less than 150 feet from any other portable or permanent sign on a single tenant lot or multi-tenant lots with more than 330 feet of frontage, the sign will not be licensed.

Citations may be issued for improper locations and failure to license portable signs.

Please feel free to call Dick Jonker, Pat Longwell, J.R. Cox or Randy Sparkman at (316) 268-4479 between 8 - 10 AM or 3:30 - 5 PM, if you have any questions about the portable sign ordinances.

Portable Sign Requirements

  1. Portable signs located in strip-centers must be at least 75 feet from another portable or a permanent sign. A "strip-center" is defined as a zoning lot of 330 feet or less of frontage with one owner and more than one tenant.

  2. Portable signs on any single tenant lot and also on strip-centers with more than 330 feet of frontage must be at least 150 feet from any other sign.

  3. The square footage of the portable sign must now be included with the total square footage allowed a zoning lot, as does a permanent sign.

  4. Portables must be located on site, meaning they must be on the property for which they are advertising.

  5. If electrically equipped, the sign must not flash or blink.

  6. No extension cords may be used, and cords must not be strung across driveways subject to traffic.

  7. Sight triangles at driveways and intersections must be observed. No portables are allowed in these triangles.
