Septic Systems

Maintaining Your Septic System

  • Have your septic tank pumped out every two (2) years, or more often if necessary to prevent the buildup of solids.

  • Do not use septic system "starters" or additives. They are not necessary and could contain ingredients which contaminate the groundwater or cause more rapid clogging of the lateral field.

  • Do not install sprinkler systems over lateral lines.

  • Do not locate driveways, parking lots, or concrete slabs over tank or lateral lines.

  • Do not allow vehicular traffic over tank or lateral lines.

  • Do not locate trees, buildings, above-ground swimming pools, salvage materials, or livestock corrals over tank or lateral lines.

  • Maintain grass cover over lateral lines.

  • Do not locate consumable crops or vegetable gardens within ten (10) feet of the septic system.

  • Do not install a water well for any purpose within fifty (50) feet of the septic system.

  • Do not dispose of chemicals from a hobby or home industry or other household hazardous materials in the septic system.

  • Do not allow surface water or water from roof downspouts and footing drains to drain to the septic system area.

Contact the Water Quality Section, Environmental Services, at (316) 268-8351, if you have questions about your septic system.

Septic Tank Abandonment

To abandon a septic tank, the following shall be accomplished:

  1. pump it out (by a licensed waste hauler), cave in or remove the lid, knock holes in the bottom (to permit the exit of surface water infiltration), and fill it in with sand, or

  2. pump it out (by a licensed waste hauler), remove both the lid and the tank, and fill the hole with fill dirt or sand.

When a tank is abandoned for connection to city sewer, City Engineering or Central Inspection has a form showing tank has been abandoned and connection to sewer made. We ask that a copy of this form be mailed to us and placed in the property file to document abandonment.
